Studies have shown that older people do not have to suffer from osteoarthritic pain. And, surprisingly, people as early as their late thirties may develop osteoarthritis.

What Is Osteoarthritis and Related Symptoms?
Osteoarthritis (OA), or degenerative joint disease, is a condition that more than 20 million Americans suffer from and is more prevalent in women than in men. The disease eats up cartilage—soft tissue on the ends of bones that come together in a joint. Normally, cartilage guides bones to glide over one another. In an Osteoarthritis patient, the cartilage breaks down and eventually deteriorates.

As a result, rather than gliding, bones rub against one another, initiating pain, swelling, and reduced joint  motion. Although most patients with OA are 65 and older, recent research reveals that osteoarthritis is not necessarily correlated to aging.

RISK FACTORS OF OSTEOARTHRITIS

• Family History of OA
• Increased Body Mass Index (being overweight)
• Sedentary Life style/ Lack of Exercise
• History of joint injuries

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF OSTEOARTHRITIS

• Constant or Intermittent joint pain
• Joint stiffness after extended periods of no movement, sitting, or sleeping
• Joint tenderness or Swelling
• Crunching sensation or the sound of bones rubbing against one another
